180 DAYS by David C. Garland
Book Description: On a morning in late October while collecting his regular Sunday newspaper, James Oswald Neville (Jon to family and friends) realises that he has not only correctly selected the six winning numbers in the national lottery but, in addition, his is the only winning ticket for the £9.7m jackpot. On the way home to tell his wife the exciting news, he is mugged, battered about the head and his wallet is stolen. The muggers, two juveniles, empty the wallet of cash and credit cards but do not find the lottery ticket which Jon habitually places in a concealed pocket in the wallet. The muggers discard the "empty" wallet by throwing it from London's Tower Bridge. Instead of falling in the Thames it inadvertently lands on the deck of a privately owned Grand Banks trawler passing under the famous bridge outward bound for Holland. The wallet is picked up from the deck and, thought to be empty, casually tossed into the map drawer in the boat's cabin to be all but forgotten.
Meanwhile Jon Neville is in hospital in a coma and, since no one is aware that he has/had the winning ticket, there is wide speculation in the press and other media as to whom the claimant is and why the massive jackpot has not been claimed. He emerges from the coma after three months but not before his two sons have just realised the unclaimed lottery ticket contains their father's favourite numbers; the same numbers he has diligently entered week-by-week since the lottery commenced in 1994.
His youngest son, Thomas, sets out on the trail of the missing ticket. He has only 90 of the 180 days during which a lottery ticket remains valid to find the ticket and help his father claim the jackpot.
